# Remote Management Playbook

This is my playbook for managing a remote team of engineers.
## 👋 Hey, y'all

## TODOs
Working with a remote, distributed, asynchronous team necessitates a handbook-first approach. All information that a team member needs should be easily discoverable and consumable.

- [ ] Add page for critical feedback
- [ ] Project kick-offs
- [ ] Project syncs
- [ ] 1:1s
Transparency is key. I want to ensure my team understands how I work and what is expected. We should all communicate ours values and approach clearly to eliminate any guesswork about my thoughts or what they should be doing.

This playbook is a collection of living documents. I will be updating it as things come up and change. If there is something you would like to see added or clarified let me know.

## 🥖 My role

I am not here to make sure you do your job, I am here to make sure you can do your job.

My role is to guide people, teams, and organizations towards achieving their goals and fostering growth. I want my team to excel in their lives, not just at work. I aim for you to feel happy, healthy, fulfilled, productive, and accomplished. I strive for you to feel that you are proficient in your job and possess the knowledge required to be effective and self-sufficient. I am here to support you in all of this.

## 💎 What do I value most

* Holistic development. We are not just employees, we're people. We are not just employees, we're people. Our work life influences our personal life and vice versa. Strive for a healthy work-life balance. Let your successes in one fuel the other.
* Growth mindset. I want to see your grow in your role, in your career, and as a person. Work with me to set and achieve goals for where you want to be.
* Outcomes and results. Everything we do should be focused on the outcome, we can figure out how to get there together. Start with the results we want and work backwards to figure out the best way to get there.
* Collaboration. Our collective goal is to grow and deliver value. Let's work together with our team and partners to achieve these goals. Don't work in a silo and communicate frequently.
* Feedback. I am always open to receiving feedback so share it whenever you like and as much as possible. I have no issue with public feedback so feel free to do so whenever the situation comes up.

## 🏗️ How I operate

* My typical work hours are Monday - Friday, 7am - 4pm Eastern. I am usually unavailable outside these hours, with work notifications turned off.
* Organization is crucial for me. I rely heavily on my calendar, notebooks, and task lists.

## ✅ My Expectations

* Keep your word. If something comes up that makes this impossible, let me know. Shit happens, let's figure it out together.
* Be honest and transparent.
* Continuously learn and grow.
* Focus. Limit your work in progress (WIP) and prioritize what is important. Prioritizing tasks and limiting multitasking leads to better results.
* Maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. Prioritize your mental health and what is significant to you.

## 😈 Personality quirks

* I am quite forgetful. If I do not note something down, there's a good chance I'll forget it.
* I have narcolepsy. If you see me yawn, I'm not bored, just tired. If you see me get up and move around, it's to maintain my attention and wakefulness.

# 1:1s

I prefer to schedule 1:1s weekly, generally lasting 30 minutes. We can extend them if necessary, and it's okay if we don't use all the allocated time. This is a weekly time slot I reserve specifically for you to discuss any topics you need or wish to cover. I avoid skipping 1:1s unless one of us is on vacation. If a conflict arises and you can't attend, let me know so we can reschedule or conduct the meeting asynchronously.

We will maintain a shared agenda for our 1:1s, which will contain our planned discussion points and any notes we take. I encourage you to contribute your own topics for discussion and jot down any necessary notes.

During our 1:1, I expect you to drive the conversation. Don't hesitate to bring up anything that's on your mind. This meeting isn't just a report of your activities, but a platform for you to present your ideas, challenges, and issues that you wish to discuss.

## Prep

1. Review the existing agenda, clarify any ambiguities, and address any outstanding action items.
1. Consult Velocity for any topics that need discussion.
1. Check the feedback database for any feedback that requires discussion.
1. Add any other necessary agenda items.

## Base Agenda

* What's on your mind?
* How happy and productive have you felt this past week?
* Talk about progress on goals and growth plan.
* What feedback do you have for me?
