Milton’s Machine

Milton’s Machine’s goal is to provide a “practical” theoretic and spectral toolset for musical composition, with some support for analysis. This base toolset can be leveraged in your own algorithmic composition code to provide enhanced functionality over Ruby’s supplyed classes. For example, the Ruby Array class provides very rich functionality for manipulating entries; however, it doesn’t provide for mod 12 operations.

Milton’s machine provides:

  • Generator - a class for producing new materials, such as permutations.

  • ForteDictionary - a class that provides a dictionary of pitch class sets as cataloged by Forte.

  • ForteSet - an extention to the Ruby Array class that adds additional operations for modulo 12 operations.

  • MatrixAnalyser - a class for analysing rows, including the ability to rotate them in groups

  • Spectrum - a class for manipulating and mapping sonic materials

  • Tuning - a class for manipulating and loading tunings related to different temperaments and microtonality.

Contributing

This is a personal project for the time being. As I find general functionality with my own composing, I will share it. Please contact me if you have any cool ideas.
