First and foremost, understand the algorithm. We spent a lot of time explaining the basics of the \gls{fft}, and how it relates to the \gls{dft}. We hope the reader understands this is the most important part of building optimal hardware. Indeed, the designer could translate C/MATLAB/Java/Python code into \VHLS and get a working implementation. And that same designer could blindly apply directives to achieve better results. However, that designer will not get anywhere close to optimal results without a deep understanding of the algorithm itself.
