Is this repo actively maintained or used? I'd love to see this backend included in the django-haystack project itself. Thoughts on submitting a PR to the django-haystack repo? That way we can get this in a well established and maintained repo with additional developers on it (including myself).

Thoughts?

+1 for this. I'd like to move from Solr to CloudSearch but would not want to re-develop everything that we already built using haystack.

I'm not maintaining this, and to my limited knowledge it is not in use where it was built. The result of my research when building this was that CloudSearch was not (at the time) a good fit for the philosophy of haystack. We went with ElasticSearch instead. This depends on an ancient boto fork, and probably needs (at the very least) to be updated to use modern boto. I haven't looked at boto's support of CloudSearch (or any new api versions) recently, but I'd be highly suspect of using boto+CloudSearch if they still don't throw any exceptions. YMMV, but good luck.
