Most of these freezes happen because autosaving (and saving in general) takes a really long time, which is a known issue (#7). You can turn autosaving off in Game options. I suggest you do that and check if the game still freezes as often as it did before.

apologies, cant seem to find the game options to disable autosave

Configuration -> Game options -> untick Autosaving checkbox.
This setting is only present in Release 2 and above.

Maybe you could force a "Saving..." message before the actual save takes place?
