The easiest way to update a hosts-file:
Download a fresh hosts-file from (for example) Dan Pollock's website, go to windows\system32\etc, disable the write protection from the old hosts-file, compare the contents and add the differing new. Done!
No need to change the (non existing) file extension. It's not a textfile! Hosts.txt doesn't work.
Don't forget to re-enable the write protection.
The host file is too often out of mind, but very important to prevent unwanted hidden connections to the internet.
My updated file now has grown to 540 kB over the years.
