Currently, we can not format ISO dates using the angular 'date' pipe. Instead of writing our own DCDate class, we could in the future use the date pipe to deal with this for us, however, this has not yet been merged into the angular master.
A pr was created on angular's github to address this issue: angular/angular#8041
