I finally decided to "Refresh Waterfox" due to a persistent memory leak. The system swap would endlessly fill up till the desktop crashed. Clicking on "Give Waterfox a tune up -> Refresh Waterfox..." in about:support did not work as intended.
Start fresh to fix performance issues. This will remove your extensions and customizations. You won’t lose essential information like bookmarks and passwords.
Yet everything is gone. All bookmarks, all passwords. Is there some restorable backup kept somewhere? I see nothing obvious in /home/user/.waterfox.

I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.
